Altitude & health issues
Mountain sickness: low oxygen levels in the atmosphere result in this physiologically imbalance. To handle mountain sickness the following factors should be taken in consideration:
Do not eat too much the day prior traveling to a high altitude region and do not eat too much during the first day or drink alcoholic beverages. Remember that simple carbohydrates will be easier to digest.
Avoid physical effort until you get acclimatized
Try to choose destinations to visit based on altitude, going first to the lower ones.
Almost every single newcomer living at low altitudes experience some stage of mountain sickness. So the psychological factor is also an important one. You have to know that you will not be feeling the same way as if you were in a coastal region.
Diseases: The most common disease experienced by foreigners is stomach related. Mostly food poisoning results from getting infected with bacteria by drinking tub water or having a meal in an anti hygienic restaurant. Symptoms usually take approximately 3 days to appear. Only drink bottled water and think two times before eating in a restaurant that does not show adequate hygiene standards. Nevertheless, note that Peruvian cuisine is highly elaborated using a large number of ingredients that may be difficult to assimilate for people not used to them.
Vaccinations: Although it is not imperative, taking a yellow fever shot before visiting an Amazon region as precaution measure. This vaccine should be taken 10 or more days before arriving in the region.
Malaria pills are suggested only when visiting some remote destinations.. |
